How Dry Carpet Cleaners Work

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Deciding on how to clean your home’s carpet can often be confusing to some. There are a variety of methods, and machine, to choose from. One of these includes dry carpet cleaning. So what is this type of cleaning method and what is it all about? Here’s a look.

A dry carpet cleaner does just as its name implies, it cleans your carpets, rugs or upholstery, without the use of water or liquid detergent.

The majority of all carpet cleaning machines use water. While they work well in most all cases, there are issues such as wet carpet to deal with that bother many homeowners.

When a carpet is dry cleaned, it is done so with a powder type of cleaner. Generally, it involves taking the powder and spreading it out over your floors and letting it sit for an hour.

What happens is that the agents inside the powder attract the dirt up to the surface where it can easily be vacuumed up.

The key with dry carpet cleaning is to get the powder spread out evenly. In some cases the cleaning machine does this for you, while in others, you do it yourself. A brush can be used to work the powder throughout the carpets.

To see the best results using this method of carpet cleaning you will always want to vacuum your floors before starting. Any stains should also be spot cleaned the best you can.

Most experts will tell you that applying the cleaning powder the night before and letting it sit overnight will give you even better results.

Naturally, you will want to follow the manufacturer’s directions with any cleaner, but this method is another option to consider in cleaning your carpets.

How to Choose New Carpet

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Buying new carpeting is a major investment for most people. Yet, for such a “big ticket” item many people don’t spend enough time during the selection process and wind up buying a carpet that is not suitable for their lifestyle. They often end up unhappy with the performance of their carpeting, which is one of the major reasons why people often choose alternative floor coverings, such as tile, wood or vinyl.

Often times, consumers are mislead by salespeople, who may push certain brands or styles that they make a higher profit margin from, or are overstocked on. The salesperson’s “recommendation” is not always a carpet that will work best for the customer.

When shopping for a new carpet, you need to discover how is the room going to be used? Will it have heavy or light foot traffic? Will the room be the center of activity for family and entertaining? Is there direct access from outside, or is the room away from entrances? Will the carpet receive direct sunlight?

Your budget and life style needs are key elements in selecting a new carpet. A better grade of carpet will give you a longer length of service than one of lesser quality.

Buy the best carpet you can afford for the heavy traffic areas of your home – family room, hallways and stairs. A medium grade is sufficient in rooms with less traffic. Many manufacturers sell different grades of the same color and style, making it easy to use different grades in your home, while maintaining a consistent appearance in all rooms.

When obtaining a cost estimate make sure that the carpet cushion, professional installation, moving of furniture and removal and disposal of your old carpeting is included.

Color selection is a very personal choice however; lighter colors show soil and pathways faster than darker or multi-colored carpets. Carpet texture will also help disguise traffic pathways and soil in your high traffic areas.

The four major types of carpet fiber are:

Nylon: Approximately 65% of all carpets sold are made from Nylon. Nylon is highly recommended because of its wear resistance, ease in cleaning, ability to withstand heavy traffic and hide soil however Nylon is prone to staining and UV fading from long term direct sunlight.

Olefin (polypropylene): Moisture and fade resistant, Olefin is cheaper to manufacture than Nylon. Many Berber style carpets are made from this fiber. Negatives: Lower heat threshold, dragging furniture across it may melt the fibers. Difficult to clean, it is “oil loving” meaning it absorbs oily soils or stains; never install olefin near the kitchen. Olefin does not withstand heavy traffic; as such gray traffic paths appear sooner.

Polyester: Noted for its luxurious, soft feel when used in thick, cut pile textures. Polyester, like Olefin is more difficult to clean than nylon. Polyester fibers also are prone to showing wear in traffic areas prematurely however are less likely to become permanently stained.

New technology has been applied to polyester fibers making it a very good choice for high use areas that may also be prone to spills. These “smart strand” fibers appear to be a better choice than olefin and may (in time) out perform nylon.

Wool: The longest wearing of all carpet fibers; however Wool is also the most    expensive and is highly susceptible to permanent staining and damage from alkaline cleaning agents. Great care and expense is required to maintain and professionally clean wool fibers.

Density and fiber twist: Aside from fiber type the two most important factors in carpet performance are density and fiber twist. Carpet quality is categorized by weight per square inch (measured in ounces) therefore the higher the face-weight (density), the better the quality.

Although carpets with a tighter twist provide enhanced durability; they are more prone to nap opposition, corn rowing and pooling problems. That being said the most expensive carpet might not be the best choice for a household filled with kids. In such situations a ‘plush’ pile (less twist) is likely the best choice as opposed to a Saxony pile.

Never cut costs when choosing a carpet pad. A high quality pad will extend the life of your carpet. Make sure that the pad you select is recommended for your style of carpet. If you need any further advice, the best person to contact is likely going to be your certified professional carpet cleaner!

How To Hire A Carpet Cleaning Company

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

The first thing to consider is the methods they will be using. Most experts agree that a truck or van powered extraction unit is the best tool for thorough extraction and soil  removal. But equally important is the experience and training of the technician performing the cleaning. The technician should be IICRC certified in carpet cleaning and the company should be an IICRC certified firm. This is imperitive if your carpet has a warranty through Shaw or Mohawk. They require firms and technician to be certified for their warranty. Also check your local Better Business Bureau, angies list and ask for references.

Next lets discuss the process. One of the first things they should do once on site is to identify the carpet fibers. They will most likely be nylon, polyester or polypropelene (olefin). These are durable fibers that clean up very nicely in most cases with the proper system of chemistry and equipment. The carpet could also be wool. Although wool makes up only a small percent of carpet out there it is very expensive and requires very special care. I have seen untrained carpet cleaners burn holes in wool using the same chemistry that would work great on nylon.

The carpet should then be thoroughly vacuumed before any moisture is applied (this is crucial). If this is not done the preconditioner will emulsify or dissolve the otherwise easily removable soils. Once the vacuuming is performed the next step is to apply the preconditioner to the entire carpet (not just traffic lanes) and let it sit for usually at least 15 minutes. The preconditioner is one of the most important steps taken. I would compare it to the soap in a load of laundry, it breaks down all of the grease and grime. This is an area where technicians cannot cut corners the product should be certified by the Carpet & Rug Institute for the carpet fiber to be cleaned.

The next step is to begin extraction using a high powered hot water (200+ degrees) extraction system. This literally flushes the carpet pile and removes the dirt and grime to the waste tank which sits in the van. The carpet should be rinsed with an acid rinse solution at around 5-6ph. This is usually mixed with the heated water in the van. This step is also critical to completely remove detergent residues and to leave the carpet fibers “slightly” acidic. Carpet will stay clean longer and resist wear if left at this ph after cleaning.

Furniture should be moved, carpet should be cleaned underneath and furniture should be reset with foam blocks or plastic tabs to protect the carpet and furniture after cleaning. The technician must make dry passes to expedite the drying of the carpet. If carpet is not dried properly many issues can arise such as rapid resoiling, delamination, bacteria development, mold and odors. Carpet should be dry normally in 2-6 hours and never longer than 12-24 hours. The dry time will depend on the level of soiling (more requires more moisture), outside conditions, equipment used, and technician care. In Maine where we are based weather has a major influence on dry times. High speed air movers can greatly expidite drying.

In summary carpet cleaners are a dime a dozen. A good reputable carpet cleaner that stands behind their work takes some research so do your homework. There are many good ones out there and when you find one keep them! I hope this article helps you in your quest.
